March is always a good month. St. Patrick's Day. My parents' wedding anniversary. Spring. Spring break. Spring break. Spring break. Oh yeah, and Spring break! Two weeks of slow mornings, peaceful runs, and life organizing is never a bad thing. But this March had a little something extra. Well two little somethings extra. My cousin/partner in teaching-crafting-giggling crime, gave birth to two tiny, precious babies. One girl and one boy. Born March 5. Tiny in size but gigantic in cuteness and specialness. Cue proud auntie hashtags: #twobabesarebetterthanone #doubletrouble #auntieswhospoil
Okay Kate, enough blather. How do these babies have anything to do with your March goal? I can hear you all asking, so I shall answer: mitts! My March goal was to knit something. I puzzled over what exactly to knit. My mom is the master knitter of Lantzville (definitely), BC (most certainly), and Canada (probably). As the saying goes, like mother like daughter. So I will be a natural right? Wrong! I blame it on my lefthandedness because usually I am a pretty quick learner. After a somewhat successful dishcloth (emphasis on the somewhat), I was stumped as to what I could knit next that would be useful and cool at the same time. Then came two babies to answer my queries. Babies with bare little hands that were in need of mitts. And thus, my real knitting project began.

I started the mitts when I was home visiting the parentals. Yes, that's her the famous knitter in the background. She's hiding her face so the knitting paparazzi don't discover her. And yes that's a glass if wine on the table. The two go hand in hand. Much like beer and crafting, vodka and sewing, or rum and painting, right?
This was the beginning of the mitt. I will admit my mom assisted me with the first one. Hey, I'm only human!
Now, flash forward one toiling week later...
Aaaaand voila! The finished mitts. I don't know if you can tell how small they are from this picture. So if you can't, I will tell you. They are small. Smaller than a grain of sand on an elephant's back. Smaller than the shreds my cat rips his toys into. Smaller than the chance the Canucks will make it to the playoffs. I think you get it.
The babies, as babies tend to be, are small as well. But for a backup plan, I will include some googley eyes with the gift, incase my craftier-than-I cousin wants to make them into finger puppets to entertain the wee babes instead.
Oh, and incase you were wondering... I found this cool online Instagram-ish photo editor called Ribbet. There was not a pink cartoon heart on my floor. I was just having a little too much fun experimenting.
And yes...the mitts are different sizes. My mom said, "they are good for a first try." I'll take it!

If you can do simple math, you have probably figured out that there are two babies and only one pair of mitts, which doesn't quite add up. Congrats! You can count!
And you can count. On me. Waiting for you. In the parking lot...
Sorry, Adam Sandler movie interlude. Anyone know what movie?
Anyways... yes there are only enough mitts for one baby. The second pair, I have started and had to restart three times already (due to a combo of yarn loving kitties and paying more attention to the TV than the knitting - thanks again Walking Dead...). So, after a little tutelage from my aunt (also a world class knitter - must be their Newfie blood), I am ready to restart the second pair for the fourth time. Fourth time's a charm right? And in case you are wondering, this pair will be orange!
If this second pair goes well, look out babies of the world! Carly Neate and Nicole Howlett, if you are reading this, you probably know what I am going to give your babies once they are born ; )
And since I am always behind with these posts, and it is already April while I am writing, you guessed right in thinking my fabulous April goal is already underway. Hold on you your knickers!
